Alice Malfunctions, My Agent and Me at Disneyland

Yes, it was that time of year again!

What's that, you ask. Well, the Annual Summit, of course. Once a year (that would be the annual part), my agent, Jodi Reamer of Writers House, and I get together to discuss serious matters like pastries, geometry and Pez.

As always, we hold these discussion at Disneyland since, um, since . . . because . . . um, because we need to. Like this year and that year.

Look! It's museum-quality corporate shots I took with my new iPhone. As you can see, I haven't figured out how to get a wide shot and a close up in the same frame, even though I am an expert when it comes to Apple products . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

More? Yep. Candid shots of us discussing the future of publishing within the scope of global economics and string theory . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Of course, while Jodi and I were working, someone else was playing . . .

Wait! Whaaa . . . what are those last two photos? It's not . . . is it?

YES! Those are actual photos of when the Alice in Wonderland ride broke down while WE WERE ON IT.

Observe this LYBE (Lisa Yee Blog Exclusive) -- a professional camera crew (that would be me and my new iPhone) were on the scene. Here's (semi) dramatic footage of the (sorta) daring rescue . . .

Happy Easter Encore

One year ago, Peepy and her friends made the epic almost-Oscar-winning-Peeple's-Choice-award-winning film, A CAUTIONARY EASTER.

What we didn't tell you last year, was that lots of famous actors and actress really wanted roles in this movie . . .

Photobucket

However, in the end, we decided that the parts should go to whomever/whoever was best at emoting. And so it was.

Now, back by popular demand, and because I am too busy trying to solve the nation's gas crisis, here's an encore of that history-making epic . . .

Um, after the video debuted, we got some comments that perhaps marshmallow Peeps were harmed in the making of the masterpiece. However, you need to know that no one was hurt, and that stunt doubles were used. To prove this, here is a cast photo taken after the filming was done . . .

Magazine Stories and a Magnificent Faculty

What do Jane Yolen, Roland Smith, Lisa Yee, Margaret Peterson Haddix, Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, Christopher Paul Curtis and Ann M. Martin have in common???

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

We'll get to that soon. But first, Storyworks magazine had this totally cool contest . . . they asked kids to "create a character."

The winning character would then come to life on the magazine pages, via a short story written by a published author. There were over TEN THOUSAND entries!!!!

Photobucket

Past authors who have penned Create a Story stories include . . . that gaggle of author pictured with Peepy, above!!! (Well, all but one.)

So then, this is how it worked. Out of the 10,000 entries, I was sent the Top 20 . . .

Photobucket

It was a HARD CHOICE to pick just one . . .

Photobucket

But I selected Claire's entry about a girl named Rian Shoe from Salem, Oregon . . .

Photobucket

As always, I did an outline and wrote the story using my Scrivener program . . .

Photobucket

Here's "The Great Fix-It Fiasco" . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Claire and her classmates will receive autographed copies of my books BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) and WARP SPEED . . .

Photobucket

Um. Puppy did not want me to sign books. She wanted to play . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Speaking of short stories, I also have another one out right now at this very moment! This one's in American Girl magazine, and called, "Kanani Saves the Day" . . .

Photobucket

Changing subjects here, although still in a story-telling mode, one of the hardest things to write can be the antagonists, that is -- the bad guy. So this August at the SCBWI Summer Conference, I'll be teaching a writer's intensive class called "Creating Compelling Bad Guys and Bullies" . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

If you haven't signed up for the conference yet, better hurry. Just look at this line up of the best editors, authors and illustrators in the business!!!

Book Trailers and Book Signings (and a Hunchback)

Hey! Remember that Klingon video Dan Santat and I made to entice people to come to the WARP SPEED and BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) Book Launch Party?

Well, Scholastic rejiggered it to make it into a book trailer!!! See . . .

Of course, it's not to be confused with the other book trailer/interview for WARP SPEED . . .

Not too long ago, my Peep and I were at the most awesome Apostrophe Books in Long Beach, CA . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Our book(s) signing was held outside . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

There was free fun and free marshmallow Peeps for all!!!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Although, some had more fun than others . . .
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Hey! Ours wasn't the only book signing recently. My pal, the sensational Sonya Sones is out with a fabulous new book . . . THE HUNCHBACK OF NEIMAN MARCUS! (True Trivia: While in college, I worked in the stationery department of Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills.)

Photobucket Photobucket

What were we looking at? Why, this gorgeous spread that Sonya put out, of course!!!

Photobucket Photobucket

In other news, here's an an interview for Amazing Kids magazine with nine-year old reporter Anni . . .
