Exploring Edinburgh . . . in the footsteps of JK Rowling

As you may have guessed from my last blog, I was in Edinburgh, Scotland!

Daughter was doing a semester at the University of Edinburgh. Here's her blog about Edinburgh, and here's her blog about books.

So then, Daughter is a HUGE Harry Potter fan. She made it a goal to meet Ms. Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh, as she did! When they met, Daughter told JK Rowling that because of the Harry Potter books, and an internship with Arthur Levine, it is her dream to work in children's publishing. Here's Ms. Rowling telling Daughter, "Good, we need people like you."

How did Daughter meet her literary idol? Well . . . she won a contest! The first dozen-ish to click into a literary society's website got to attend a webcast of Ms. Rowling talking about THE CASUAL VACANCY, her new novel, plus get a book (or two) autographed. So here's what I got for Christmas . . .

Years earlier, Son got to meet JK Rowling thanks, to Arthur Levine who's my editor and edited the HARRY POTTER series!

(That's Son's back in the photo.)

Being in the land where the Harry Potter books were penned, Daughter took me to The Elephant House were some of the books were written . . .

Later, it was time for an-almost-midnight-tour of places that inspired the HARRY POTTER books . . .

Here's The Elephant House by night, plus another place she wrote . . .

This street is said to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley . . .

Thomas Riddell(s), father and son, lie in Greyfriar's graveyard. It is said the name was the inspiration for Tom Riddle a.k.a. LORD VOLDEMORT!!!

Professor McGonagall? Could this be who she was named for?

Greyfrier's is also famous for Greyfriar's Bobby. Pubs and statues and such honor this loyal dog . . .

And finally, we end our Harry Potter tour at this posh private school. It was the inspiration for Hogwarts . . .

Stay tuned for more adventures in Scotland, including the Highlands, Monty Python, a couple of castles, cheese toasties, and much more!!!!

In the meantime, back in the United States, Children's Book Council Diversity asked if I thought I was a diverse author. I said no. You can read why this interview with me.

I was also given a writing assignment. One of these paragraphs is tone deaf when it comes to cultural diversity. To find out which one, and why, click here and scroll down.

===========================

Oh, look! These books make lovely gifts for you or someone you know, or someone you may know sometime. If you'd like an autographed book, order from Vroman's. Be sure to tell them that you'd like me to sign them, and include the name(s) of who the books should be made out to. Then they will mail it/them to you!"
