Woo Hoo, WARP SPEED! Plus, a Bad Puppy, a Parade, and a Bug with a Human Head

Squeeee!!! WARP SPEED has been named a TOP SHELF book by VOYA (Voices of Youth Advocates)!

Photobucket

WARP SPEED's also been named to the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) Best Fiction for Young Adults list!!!

Want to know more about the book? Why, I just happen to have this video clip of me speaking Klingon and describing it . . .

Here's another video about the book, and why I wrote it . . .

And here's more! Two anthologies that I've contributed to, DEAR BULLY and GEEKTASTIC have made the YALSA 2012 Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list!

So, of course, the best way to celebrate this cool news was to go to Los Angeles's Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown . . .

Oops. I didn't have room to add this on my last blog, but after our signing at Apostrophe Books last week, we explored the Belmont Shores shopping district where indie bookstore is located. We stumbled across a Willy Wonka-worthy candy store called Powell's Sweet Shoppe. And sure enough! Willy Wonka, the movie, was playing . . .

Nearby was Luna where they had lots of handmade jewelry and crafts and stuff. I was quite taken with the bugs . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

That's because recently there was a giant bug with a human head in our house, and I had to relocate it across the street. So, I decided to get a bug in honor of the other bug. I named him "Lowell," after the elementary school . . .

The last place we stopped at before heading home was a wonderful bakery . . .

Photobucket

I spent a long time trying to decide what to get, and finally settled on a gingerbread man. However, when I got home, I left it on my desk and when I returned, it was GONE!!!! I'm not naming names, but I have a suspect in mind . . .

Photobucket

I suppose I should feel good about the cookie gone missing. It could have been worse. Here are some things Puppy had done in the past . . .

The Essential Apostrophe and Gung Hei Fat Choy!

Some apostrophes are unnecessary, like these from the blog Apostrophe Abuse . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

However, other Apostrophes are absolutely, positively, totally, totally necessary . . . .

Photobucket

That's right. I'm talking about that wonderful indie store Apostrophe Books in Long Beach, CA. I was there last year when WARP SPEED launched, and was back recently . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

All the author/illustrators who spoke at Lowell Elementary signed at the store the next day . . .

Photobucket

And what a marvelous bookstore it is!!! There's something about a bookstore. You walk in and instantly feel good. Bookstore therapy. Yes, that's what is is.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Oh sure, the internet is all fine and dandy. In fact, for some of us, we use it Waaaaaay Tooooo Much and need help discipling ourselves. And yes, there are e-books.

However, there's nothing like buying a book, a real book, one to have and to hold, in sickness and in heath, from this day forward until death do you part (or something like that.)

Here are a few books of mine that I am wedded to . . .

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I wrote a book called GOOD LUCK, IVY, about a Chinese American Girl growing up in San Francisco. In the story, she's a really good gymnast because I was a . . . really bad gymnast. Anyway, here's Ivy and me . . .

Photobucket Photobucket

Recently I heard from the fabulous Berkeley Book Worms from Berkeley Elementary in Westwood, NJ. They just started their book club and chose GOOD LUCK, IVY as their first pick to help celebrate Chinese New Year!!!

Photobucket

Gung hei fat choy -- Happy Chinese New Year to the Berkeley Book Worms, and everyone who is Chinese, and to everyone who isn't Chinese, and anyone I may have left out!!!
