San Jose and Steinbeck

Okay, so I'm all discombobulated time-wise. Right now I am at the most fabulous SCBWI Conference in Los Angeles, and will be writing about that soon. However, this blog takes place during a recent visit to Northern California, which begs the question . . .

Do you know the way to San Jose?

Photobucket

We do! We were there recently and visited Hicklebee's! Here's Peepy and I in the store, plus the gazillion author/illustrator autographs they've collected . . . on their doors and walls!!!

While we were in San Jose, Peepy got some nice new jewelry at the airport. Then we both got confused when we checked into our hotel . . .

We love the area and even visited earlier this year . . .

In addition to Hicklebee's, we visited Canary Row in Monterey. It was made famous by John Steinbeck . . .

We like Steinbeck and have even been to his house before . . .

Oh wait! Back to Canary Row . . . in addition to Steinbeck monuments, there were also shops and eating places. Peepy and I felt it necessary to research these places . . .

However, the highlight of Cannery Row was at the pier, where Peepy met a baby seal . . .

Here's Dionne Warwick singing "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" . . .

Or, if you prefer, here's the Lawrence Welk rendition . . .

And finally, do you have any Hairstyle Regrets? I sure do. CLICK HERE to see what happens when an Asian high school girl tries to look like Farrah Fawcett.

Lisa Sees Cecil

Can you guess who Peepy and I saw recently? Hmmmm . . .

Photobucket

(Um, to avoid THIS CONFUSION, lemme just say that no, it's not Lisa See's Cecil or Lisa See Cecil, it's Lisa Sees Cecil.)

Yes! We went to our friend Cecil Castellucci's book signing for her TWO new books!!!!

There were lovely treats . . .

(Anji Williams, a WONDERFUL TEACHER and all-around cool person, made the sandwiches.)

The last time we saw Anji, she was looking like this. . .

(Um, that's Anji on the right. CLICK HERE to find out where we were and the wonderful stuff that was going on.)

Oh! Back to the bookstore. Peepy shared a chocolate cupcake with her friend Violet . . .

Then the gala event began as Cecil read from her first picture book, GRANDMA'S GLOVES . . .

The book was so lovely and poignant that people (me) and Peeps (she) cried.

Next, Cecil and her friends from the NY School of Performing Arts acted out a chapter from ROSE SEES RED, her new novel. It was soooo fun! Peepy even worked her way up to the front to perform with them . . .

BTW, I sat in the front row and was able to snap these shots of these chic shoes . . .

However, I think Teen's Dr. Seuss Converse won the Coolest Shoes Award . . .

Speaking of young people (as opposed to old people, which would be me), recently I was interviewed by Molly Kateri, a grad student at New School. She's started her own YouTube Channel and posts her talks with authors, like me and Cecil! Here's how mine went.

Signing off from Skylight Books!!!
